About Areopagus

Areopagus is a campus ministry based on these propositions:

  • The Christian message has continuing relevance to the context of higher education
  • Learning and faith should work together and complement each other in the Christian life
  • The work we do at the university—learning, teaching, researching and serving—should be an integral part of our Christian walk

Areopagus is named for the hill in Athens were St. Paul reasoned with the Greek philosophers in Acts 17. We chose this name because we seek to proclaim the gospel within the context of higher education and in conversation with the people who work there.

Our founding Areopagus ministry director was Randy Gabrielse (Ph.D., Michigan State, 2002). We are currently between directors.

Areopagus was founded in 2004 to pursue two objectives:

  • To foster awareness on the Iowa State University campus among faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and other members of the campus community of the relevance of the Christian message to the context of higher education.
  • To train students to engage the world from the perspective of a Biblical world and life view in their future careers and communities.

Areopagus is a ministry of the Christian Reformed Church. It is supported by CRC Home Missions and the CRC churches of Iowa through their four classes (Northcentral Iowa, Heartland, Pella and Iakota). A ministry association, which consists of representatives of these supporters, has oversight of the ministry. A local ministry board is responsible for its ongoing administration. Locally, Areopagus is supported by Trinity Christian Reformed Church.
